D Visa vs. Residence Permit — what is the difference? A D visa (6-month national visa) is issued at a Bulgarian embassy abroad and is your entry ticket into Bulgaria. The residence permit is a biometric plastic card issued inside Bulgaria, initially for 1 year and renewed annually. After 5 years of continuous residence you can apply for permanent residency; after 5 more years, for citizenship.
7 Legal Ways to Obtain a Bulgarian Residence Permit
1 · Pensioner / Financially Independent Person
The most popular route among retirees and people with passive income — pensions, rental income, dividends. Requirements: proof of regular income (approximately €600–700/month for a single applicant; more for a family), a lease or owned property in Bulgaria, health insurance, and a certificate of good conduct. 2 · Trade Representative Office (TRO)
